The LiveWorkPlay Showcase Trivia Family Fun Night was held tonight with 60 people with intellectual disabilities and their family members in attendance. There were several group trivia games and the grand finale of improv "Our Event Is The Best" presentations. Click here for a photo album from this event!

The annual LiveWorkPlay open house took place today. Visitors included people with intellectual disabilities, parents, social workers, case managers, and others. Congratulations to Jennifer Harris, Melissa Ottway, Heather Wynn, and Jenny Dobson from SMILE who conducted tours and answered questions.

Ten SMILE-TNG participants and four LWP staff members returned safely from their journey to the Los Angeles area today. They enjoyed time at Universal Studios, the Santa Monica pier and beach, a tour of the stars in Beverly Hills, the acclaimed play Wicked at the Pantages Theatre, and of course lots of shopping! The 2008 edition of the MBNA Recipe for Success Culinary Adventure and Charity Auction will take place at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, March 25 at our new location, the Hampton Inn Ottawa Conference Centre (located next to the former Lynx baseball stadium with ample free parking). There was not an empty seat in the house as close to 600 celebrants packed into the ballroom of the Crowne Plaza for New Year's Eve In Ottawa! After a delicious buffet dinner Sticks 'n Stones took to the stage and the dance floor exploded! The party carried on well past 2:00 AM and set attendance and fundraising records. There was media coverage by A-Channel news and SNAP Ottawa Downtown (click here for the article).

For the first time in a long time Halloween Family Fun Night was held at a venue big enough to accommodate everyone in the same room! This meant that a crowd of 100 made up of Journeys participants, SMILE participants, parents, volunteers, and staff had a blast together with three hours of games, tricks, and treats. Today was voting day for the Ontario provincial election. While turnout across the province was a disappointing record low 53%, the figure was an incredible 95% for eligible SMILE and Journeys participants! Click here to listen to a series of short interviews on radio 580 CFRA.

The annual Orientation event is a chance for volunteers, participants, parents, and staff to come together and prepare for the coming year. This year's breakout discussions included a session called "Staying Connected" and the announcement of a new Members Only area of the LiveWorkPlay website. The September 25th charity golf tournament hosted by Quelmec Loss Adjusters and O.B. Villeneuve Insurance has raised more than $15,000 for LiveWorkPlay. The LiveWorkPlay Annual General Meeting 2007 featured a review of the work of the Board of Directors and a report on programs and activities by the Executive Staff. The 2006-2007 year was notable for the rapid development of the On Our Own Together - Again housing strategy, which included the purchase of two condominium units by LiveWorkPlay. LiveworkPlay is pleased to announce the launch of On Our Own Together Too (OOOT-TOO) a transitional housing program for people with intellectual disabilities. OOOT-TOO will receive funding support from the Community Foundation of Ottawa for the next three years, and comes as an outcome of the OOOT and OOOT2 projects in 2003 and 2004. OOOT-TOO will be for some the launch pad for a move to a permanent home, and for others will be a starting point to better understanding their housing needs and abilities. Thirteen SMILE-TOG participants and the LWP staff team returned to Ottawa International Airport yesterday after a very successful excursion to Boston. Active Community Experiences in Summer (ACES) came to an end today after four one-week sessions that featured a record number of new participants. ACES featured everything from computers to volunteering to a day at the beach! On the final day of the program two ACES participants ended up getting involved in a live public performance as part of the Ottawa Buskers Festival! Self-Advocacy and More for Independent Living and Employment (SMILE) is also over for the year for members of SMILE-TNG (the next generation) but continues for another week for SMILE-TOG (the original generation) most of whom are now preparing for a trip to Boston that departs on Sunday. The Engines of Success recognition banquet was a sold-out affair with 170 members of the extended LiveWorkPlay family in attendance! Leanne Cusack served as host of this celebration and demonstration of self-advocacy and contributing citizenship. This year's Visioning Day tackled the question of "What is a good life?" for people with intellectual disabilities, addressing barriers ranging from discrimination to limited social roles. There was also a dialogue with the Board of Directors about how to better promote the work of LiveWorkPlay to the Ottawa community.
