Reflections on a busy fall, looking ahead to an exciting winter!

The Welcome Back Family Feast and Annual General Meeting on September 19 was attended by more than 150 supporters and the upbeat atmosphere benefited from the presence of Her Excellency Sharon Johnston, who presented The Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award to 10 recipients. The award recognizes individuals who volunteer their time to help others and to build a smarter and more caring nation. You can read more about the recipients and the ceremony from our September 23 blog.

The AGM was also the occasion for the release of a video produced by Dow Honda to promote employment. It features LiveWorkPlay member Royce Rinne and his work at Dow as an Inventory Analyst. The video is soon to be included in the Government of Ontario publication “Spotlight on Transformation.”The regular business of the evening included the election of the board of directors, which includes four new members. You can read their biographies in the Annual Report 2014. The membership also adopted new bylaws associated with the LiveWorkPlay application  for continuance under the new Canadian Not-for-profit Corporations Act. LiveWorkPlay has since received the official Certificate of Continuance.

It’s that time of year: whether on a billboard through an email or in your workplace, you are hearing about the annual United Way Ottawa campaign. For more about our partnership with United Way Ottawa including links to donation forms, please see our October 15 blog. LiveWorkPlay supports and benefits from the campaign in various ways throughout the year. Efforts have been made to offer opportunities for our members to get involved, and this has included:

  • Cooper Gage and his involvement in the Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign Wellness Run
  • CTV interview with Matt Suttie and mother Allison about employment at Imperial Coffee
  • Janet Balcome joins up with the staff team to network at Schmoozefest 2014
  • Ottawa Citizen story about EARN job fair with quotes from Bothtawee Kelly

Our co-leader Keenan Wellar has also contributed with an appearance on Daytime Ottawa with Derick Fage and an interview on CFRA with Rick Gibbons to talk about United Way and other topics including the Opportunities and Possibilities conference that was held on October 20. Community Connector Caitlin Fortier appeared on video at Schmoozefest and Jen Bosworth contributed to the Ottawa Citizen story about the EARN job fair.

The LiveWorkPlay Applied Research Scholarship is dedicated to supporting University of Ottawa graduate students engaged in applied research that is

designed to advance understanding of how to promote and achieve the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in the community. This can be related to living situations, employment, social activity, citizenship, or a combination of relevant topics.

The scholarship is made possible thanks to University of Ottawa Professor Emeritus Barry Wellar and his wife Marjorie. Learn more about the scholarship and how it become associated with LiveWorkPlay from our October 1 blog.

Congratulations to our Manager of Employment Supports Jen Bosworth who earned her Certified Employment Support Professional (CESP) designation after

writing the exam at the APSE conference, where she also presented with Julie Kingstone and Keenan Wellar. Speaking of those two, they have completed the BoardSource Certified Governance Trainer program.
