Shayna Grey: Second Year LiveWorkPlay Work Anniversary!
Quality in human services has a direct correlation to quality humans delivering those services, and experienced, committed staff who stay in their jobs over the long term are critical to a strong workplace culture. They serve as mentors to new staff, and establish a consistent trusted presence with individuals supported by LiveWorkPlay and their families. We are now sharing a bit more about our staff team on their annual workplace anniversaries. Join us in celebrating a May 31 second year work anniversary for Shayna Grey!
What is your favourite memory of your most year at LiveWorkPlay?
Over the last year at I have had the privilege of making many great memories with a variety of members. One particular experience that has stood out to me has been watching one of them thrive in their place of work, because employment always been a goal that is incredibly important to her. I always enjoy opportunities to visit her at work, and sometimes it means I get to enjoy a unique experience. For example, on one occasion we were able to ride together through Ottawa in a huge 18-wheeler and see the sights from that perspective. It was a memory I’ll never forget!
What is your favourite memory of your time at LiveWorkPlay over the years?
In addition to all the relationships with members, I have enjoyed some interesting experiences filling in for colleagues or helping out with some extra duties during the busier times of year. For example, last summer I got to help out the employment team with two individuals who got hired by Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group and I was supporting them to learn everything involved in working at Ottawa RedBlacks football games.
I was amazing to see all the work that goes into hosting the games, not just what happens when 25,000 people are in the stadium, but the hours involved in setting up and cleaning up. They have a great team that works really hard, and it was neat to see the people I was helping become a part of that team, and to see how they were welcomed and learned how to do the job just like everyone else.
What are you looking forward to in the future at LiveWorkPlay?
In the future I most look forward to attending events such as the Family Feast and Make A Buzz Ottawa where I get the opportunity to meet and chat with new members and their families. Most of us only work with certain people, but we share good news about members we are supporting, and it’s fun to meet them in person and put names to faces. Aside from events, I also look forward to learning about new resources throughout the city and trying to find new and creative ways to get our members connected. It’s a big part of our work to research and develop connections with people and venues. The more we understand what is out there the better we are able to help make the right connections for people we are supporting.
What do Shayna’s colleagues have to say about her?
Shayna doesn’t seem to feel any need to prove herself to anyone, she just knocks it out of the park all the time, and that’s why she is so well respected by her peers, members, and families.
I think my favourite thing about her is how she handles it when people mistake her unassuming style as an indication of inexperience. Shayna will just calmly listen as they explain something to her that she could do in her sleep, and the rest of us try not to laugh.
I don’t want to give it away but she can do a sort of magic trick. If you see her at a family feast or some other event, you should ask her about it!
