Total Communication Environment (TCE) Receives LiveWorkPlay Community Partner Award

Transcript of live presentation by LiveWorkPlay Co-Leader Julie Kingstone at the LiveWorkPlay Open House and Annual Awards, April 10, 2025, at Bayview Yards in Ottawa, Canada

The second housing partner we would like to recognize tonight is a community organization that LiveWorkPlay has worked with over the last 30 years. When LiveWorkPlay was just getting started back in the late nineties, we looked for mentors and organizations we could learn from, and we immediately developed an affinity for this organization, over shared values and their approach to supporting the community to be a more welcoming place for all. Over the years we got to know each other through working together on various committees and networks.

Our teams have trained together, most recently developing our skills and knowledge on person-centred and person-directed practices. This organization has a wealth of experience in supporting adults with aging in place. In recent years LiveWorkPlay has recognized that many individuals we support are aging and are requiring different levels of support, so it was a natural progression in our relationship with this organization to see how we could work together to support the needs of individuals who are aging.

Two years ago, one individual we were supporting had been hospitalized after breaking her leg and it was clear that between our support and home care this was not going to be enough for her to have a good life in her apartment. Last year another individual identified that he needed more support. In both cases we approached Total Communication Environment to see what we could do together.

TCE is a non-profit charitable organization that provides lifetime residential support, community participation, day services and outreach to long term care for adults with multiple disabilities and special communication needs.

In both cases the stars aligned, and both individuals have been welcomed by TCE, where they are receiving just enough support – the support they need while living their lives to the fullest possible.

TCE’s website states: TCE is led by a core team that understands firsthand what it means to deliver quality care and create bonds for life. With staff exhibiting the same shared values displayed by their leaders, TCE is able to focus on what is most important: the individual. This is achieved by adapting to the changing needs and desires of those we support and serve. This is the hallmark of TCE’s services and is why families have grown to trust TCE. We are more than an organization. TCE is a connection. For life.

And this is exactly what we experienced!

Please join me in celebrating representatives of the great team at TCE: Karen Walker, Tanya Rabie, Tim Siebrasse, Robin Meyers, Theo Tsang, Colleen Thurston, and Jackie Power.
